National review of faith-based responses to HIV in Cambodia   Download (pdf 4,789 KB)

A joint initiative of the National AIDS Authority and Ministry of Cult and Religion, with technical support from UNICEF

Across Cambodia, faith-based organisations are an important part of the national response to HIV and AIDS. This publication highlights the significant role that faith-based actors have in the social and economic development of children, women and families.  This review provided a unique opportunity to document Buddhist, Christian, Muslim and inter-faith initiatives providing varied and wide ranging responses to HIV. Together they mobilise volunteers, and implement innovative HIV prevention, treatment, care and support, and impact mitigation interventions inclusively to all community members. Far from shying away from complex and sensitive issues, nearly half of the participating faith-based organisations work with key affected populations, and over two-thirds provide sexuality and family planning education.

Impact Assessment 2002-2009

Is it possible to document the impact of a regional initiative that covers the whole of sub-Saharan Africa? It is certainly a challenge, but this publication shows that the ten-year existence of the Ecumenical HIV and AIDS Initiative in Africa (EHAIA) has changed the scene.

Responding to the Feminization of AIDS: Women and Intimate Partner Transmission of HIV (Indonesia, Lao PDR and Thailand)

This research for UNIFEM looked at the causes and impacts of intimate partner transmission of HIV, and how these affect women.  The research focussed on three countries in the Asia region: Indonesia, Lao PDR and Thailand. As HIV prevention responds to most-at-risk populations, over time HIV transmission among women and men in intimate relationships comes into starker view.

Faith in the System: The impact of local HIV responses on strengthening health systems in Malawi and Chad

There has been an ongoing debate as to whether the significant investment in HIV and AIDS programmes has diverted funding from other areas of health programmes, and whether such direct (vertical) HIV funding has an impact on the strengthening or weakening of health systems. The debate raises the question of whether funding vertical HIV and AIDS programming or integrated horizontal approaches is more appropriate.  The focus of this research is the role of faith-based organisations - which to date have been largely unacknowledged in the discourse on HIV funding and health systems strengthening - to see if and how local faith-based responses to HIV strengthen health systems. Commissioned by Tearfund, the research aims to contribute to the growing literature on health systems strengthening by adding the experiences of faithbased responses.

The Impact of Increased Availability of Antiretroviral Therapy on Programmes Responding to People Living with HIV and AIDS

This report is the result of research commissioned by CAFOD into the impact that antiretroviral therapy (ART) has on programmes responding to HIV and AIDS.  As ART becomes increasingly available, affordable and accessible it brings undeniable benefits to those served by programme partners in many countries. People accessing treatment are enjoying improved health, sustained -or a return to- employment, renewed ability to become active members of their society and overall improved quality of life for themselves and those dependent on them. With these benefits come new aspirations in people living with HIV and therefore different expectations by them of the programmes that support them.
