Kenya

Over 100 residents of Embu town in Kenya last weekend took part in a voluntary exercise to clean up the town to mark this year's Tenrikyo Hinokishin day

The residents who included pupils, students, women and youth groups, the business community and workers from corporate firms cleaned the streets, bus/matatu terminus, the provincial general hospital and St. Monica school for handicapped children.

According to the director of Tenri Society in Kenya Yasuo Shiojiri, Hinokishin is a Japanese term which means kind actions to others as a way expressing gratitude to God for His immense blessing.

The day which is celebrated each year gives an opportunity for people who live in the same locality to come together and offer voluntary services to help one another.

Vimal Chadha, a councilor from Embu municipal council hailed the initiative saying it creates awareness among the local residents, business community and the administration on the environment and the need to partner with the council to keep the town clean.
